2020 Grand National Roadster Show in Pamona, CA. Debuts two new Speed33 Builds.

American Speed Company and Roush Performance Engines showcased their products again this year in building 4 at the GNRS. We also had the pleasure to see, firsthand, the two latest Speed33's to be completed. Congratulations to Brandie Laird and Nick Testa on their brand new Speed33 builds.

Built as a 1934 Ford Roadster, Brandie and her family teamed up with Adam’s Hot Rod Shop to deliver an H&H built 205c.i. Lincoln V12 powered Speed33 with plenty of unique styling and detail. This build went from concept to reality in record time and was completed with all of the attention to quality, fit and finish you would expect from an AMBR Contender. Brandie and her sweet hot rod took home the “H&H Best Dressed Flathead Award” and 'AMBR Achievement' plaque while at the show.

Another award winning Speed33 was built by the team at Roy Brizio’s Street Rods for customer Nick Testa. This eye catching green Speed33 was paired up an LS3 and Tremec 5 Speed, fully independent suspension components supplied by Kugel Komponents, and interior by Sid Chavers Upholstery. Congratulations to Nick, Roy, and the crew on your 2nd place award in ‘Altered Street Roadster’ pre-1935.

American Speed Company debuts a fresh '32 5-Window Coupe at the 2018 Detroit Autorama.

Adding to the mix of traditional roadster builds that American Speed is known for, this build involved a ’32 5-window coupe, which was built for long-standing customer, Tim Bumgarner, out of Richfield, Minnesota. Tim and his wife, Terry, own a collection of vehicles, including ’32 Dearborn Deuce and Speed33 roadsters, also built by American Speed over the years. This time, Tim commissioned us to take over the build of a 5-window coupe project based on an original body that he was able to obtain some time ago. After much deliberation, the decision was made to sell that original body and start with some fresh sheet metal. We ordered a United Pacific 5-window coupe steel body. Precision Hot Rods and Fabrication’s chassis provides the moving foundation for this beauty. They bobbed the front, raised the rear 2” and stretched the wheelbase 2” to give it a stronger look overall. It also features Kugel Komponents IFS/IRS, which will add a dimension of modern day ride and handling to the driving experience.

The power plant for this dynamo is a rare, 1956 Dodge 315 ci Red Ram hemi. Tim’s engine builder, Guy Henson, was able to locate this gem in a remote bone yard in northern Minnesota and brought it back to life with a modern EFI system in an old-school styled throttle body package. It certainly makes for a unique application in conjunction with the Tremec T56 magnum 6-speed. Tim is the kind of guy to put his cars through the paces and he will do so in fine style with his new 5-window!

The PPG Icelandic Blue Mica beauty treatment was provided by Motor City Solutions - Hot Rods and Restorations in Taylor, MI. Poised in Ridler Alley near Cobo Hall’s main entrance, it glistened under the lights and drew admirers from afar.

The car certainly received its share of notoriety at the show, with crowds of on-lookers waiting their turn to be able to see it up close. It definitely caught the eyes of the judges, taking 2nd place in the tough Altered Street Coupe, Pre-’35 category. It also received an ISCA Outstanding Paint Award and an ISCA Outstanding Engine in a Rod Award.

Congratulations Tim! And thank you and Guy for letting us help bring your vision to reality!

American Speed Company Scores Big at the 2017 Detroit Autorama.

American Speed Company placed two entries at this year’s 2017 Detroit Autorama.  Both of these high end custom builds were executed on behalf of customer, Danny Shaffer, out of Bakersfield, California.

The air was buzzing around the two displays stationed front and center in Ridler Alley, as they greeted show spectators entering the hall through the main doors.  The first was a spectacular ’61 Ford Starliner with a glistening PPG metallic maroon paint application, compliments of Motor City Solutions of Taylor, MI.  Powered by an 815+ hp Jon Kaase Boss 429, opened up to 598ci and propelled by a Tremec T56 Magnum, this monster will be testing the concrete wherever it ventures. Poised on top of a Roadster Shop chassis with Corvette Z06 front suspension and a Ford 9” rear end, it will be skating on Schott Modsport 17X8” front and 18X10” rear wheels.  Natural Grain Chestnut leather custom interior by American Speed. This entry received a 2nd place award in the competitive Street Touring class, along with an ISCA Outstanding Paint award.

The adjoining display housed a ’32 Roadster Pickup based off of a Dearborn Deuce body with all new custom sheetmetal forming the rear half of the body.  The functional Speedline ’32 convertible top feature was preserved, complete with curved windshield and enhanced throughout the transformation. The custom mix green PPG Deltron skin was also applied by Motor City Solutions. This beauty features a Ford Racing Performance 392ci small block, bolted to a Gearstar 4R70W automatic tranny. Balanced nicely on a stretched ’32 chassis provided by Precision Hot Rods of Macedonia, Ohio, it is outfitted with American Rebel Mfg 15X6” front and 16X10” rear wheels, Super Bell aluminum drilled front axle and Kugel Komponents IRS. Distressed Paprika leather interior by American Speed.  This high end custom build took a 1st place award for its class, along with ISCA Outstanding Display and Outstanding Street Rod awards.

Danny Shaffer is no stranger to the Detroit Autorama, even though he hails from Bakersfield, California.  In addition to these projects, he has previously displayed a fendered Kaase Boss 429 (520ci 640+ hp) Speed33 at the 2013 show and a ’64 Ford Fairlane with a supercharged Coyote installed at the 2015 event.  Thanks for the thrills, Danny!

19th Annual PPG Goodguys Nationals in Columbus, OH

American Speed participated in the Goodguys Nationals in Columbus for the 10th straight year. While we all greatly missed Gary Meadors, Founder of Goodguys Rod & Custom, we certainly felt him smiling down on us with some of the best weather we can remember for this event. American Speed Company makes show debut with two fresh builds at the 2016 Detroit Autorama

Deahna’s Speed33: Speed33 wins the prestigious A Brothers Award at the 2016 Detroit Autorama!  American Speed Company worked in conjunction with customer, Jay Deahna of Laguna Niguel, CA to design and build this exquisite rendition of our all steel Speed33. This tri-coat candy red beauty features an LS3 powerplant, coupled with a 4L70E tranny, Roadster Shop chassis with Kugel IFS/IRS suspension, Schott MOD 5 EXL wheels and dazzling paint applied by DST Industries of Romulus, MI.  The A Brothers award is given out annually at the Detroit Autorama by Mike Alexander, Jr of the Alexander family, in honor of continuing the legacy of Mike, Sr and his brother, Larry. To qualify, the car must be exclusively shown at Autorama.  The award recognizes their preference for “progressive design, coupled with clean execution”.  The car also received award recognition in the competitive ‘33/’34 Altered Street Roadster class, along with an outstanding display award. CONGRATULATIONS to Jay Deahna!

Shaffer's Fairlane: American Speed also debuted a ’64 Fairlane for Danny Shaffer of Bakersfield, CA.  Featuring a supercharged Coyote boasting over 620hp, this moss green gem glimmered under the spotlights in the front row off the main entrance of Cobo Hall. The engine is setup with a unique dual tube, Thunderbolt style intake system, giving it a menacing look to say the least.  This beast will churn up the road on a Roadster Shop chassis while taking orders from a 6 speed manual Tremec.  It is capped off with Budnik Remington style wheels, American Speed custom interior and a superb paint application by Motor City Solutions of Taylor, MI.  You’ll be hearing a lot more about this one in an upcoming issue of Street Rodder Magazine. In his show debut, Gil LeBlanc from New Brunswick, Canada, drew top honors with his Aston Martin Blue, Speed33. Wowing the crowd, this Speed33 won the Altered Street Roadster Pre’35 Class. In addition, it also took Street Rodder’s Best Ford in a Ford award, the ISCA Outstanding Street Rod and Outstanding Undercarriage Awards!

Built and painted by Gil LeBlanc and his crew at Untamed Rods and Customs in Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada, this Speed33 is equipped with a 347 Stroker, fueled by an Inglese 8-stack injection system. It is bolted up to a Ford AOD and perched over a Roadster Shop Chassis with a chromed out Pete & Jake’s Super Bell dropped I-beam front suspension and Heidt’s independent rear suspension. A collaboration of 19” front and 20” rear Savini / Cottington wheels round out the astounding profile.

The Aston Martin Blue exterior paint blended perfectly with the custom interior executed by American Speed Company. The Speed33 interior trim was enhanced in Spinneybeck Espana Cerveza leather, Bill Hirsch Mercedes Blue carpeting and a Wise Guys bench seat (with bucket seat styling). Custom  accents throughout the interior and engine compartment included decorative chromed  “winged 33” emblems, custom valve covers and 8-Stack trumpets all provided by Clay Cook Enterprises.

Taking notice of the numerous accolades that this Speed33 garnered, Street Rodder magazine will be featuring this award winner in an upcoming edition.

After the Detroit AutoRama event, this roadster hit the highway, on to the state of Florida, before heading back to its home turf in New Brunswick, Canada.

Loss of Legendary Customizer

American Speed Company mourns the loss of Michael Alexander, of the legendary Alexander Brothers car customizing fame.  He was a former colleague from ASC Inc. and dear friend to many of us here at American Speed.  Mike didn't know the definition of retirement.   He lived and breathed anything to do with car customization.   A three-time Don Ridler Award winner, along with his late brother Larry, his last project was the Vision 33 (see gallery page).  Four years in the making, the Vision 33 debuted at the 60th Annual Detroit Autorama, in 2012.  A labor of love, Mike turned this creation into a Pirelli Great 8 award winner.

Whether it was to drop by for a coffee, take a tour of the shop, or to mentor and offer advice to the younger generation at American Speed, his presence will be deeply missed.  Mike was one of a kind and a car customizing enthusiast to the end.

Street Rodder Road Tour makes a pitstop at American Speed Co.

On Monday, August 11th, American Speed had the prestigious honor of hosting
the 2014 Amsoil/Street Rodder Road Tour. This cross country extravaganza
started June 7th at Vintage Air in San Antonio, TX and runs through
November, with a finish line in Las Vegas. The sleek looking red '59 Impala
and a group of approximately 40 hot rodders arrived late morning. They
were greeted by American Speed Company owner, Mark Trostle, who welcomed
them to a pizza luncheon and an overview about our heritage and the products
we offer. We thanked Jerry Dixey, Street Rodder magazine and the road tour
group, for braving the weather and imminent threat of heavy rains. The
robust cavalcade included more than 15 out of state streetrods. Jerry's
well orchestrated itinerary brought about 70 people onsite and the group
enjoyed a facility tour, viewing the many projects under way. Mark was also
able to coordinate a visit for the group over at Roush to see the engine
shop and museum while they were in town. This is the second time (2008)
that American Speed has had the honor to participate in the Street Rodder
Road Tour. It was a great time for all!

Hometown Boys Score Big at 62nd Annual Detroit Autorama

The crew at American Speed Company drew top honors at the 2014 Autorama held in Detroit on the weekend of March 7th thru 9th. Making its show debut, this fendered roadster, built for local customers Bob and Connie Gula, took 1st place in the Altered Street Roadster Pre ’35 Class. This dazzling Speed33 gleamed under the lights of Cobo Hall, behind a brilliant tri-coat candy red paint job, furnished by Prefix Corporation, of Auburn Hills, MI. The interior, also done by our own in-house trim department, is accented with a plush Sabrina Cashew Spinneybeck leather interior featuring a Wise Guys bench seat setup. The custom six gauge instrument panel was fabricated by American Speed Company’s own craftsmen and sports American Tradition custom gauges by Classic Instruments of Boyne City, MI. It sits atop a Roadster Shop chassis with independent front and rear Heidt’s suspension and is powered by a 351 Windsor engine and 4 speed AOD tranny, provided by Total Performance, of Clinton Township, MI. The Real Rodder’s wheels, complete with knockoff spinners, should give it a menacing look as it cruises into local gatherings this summer!

Congratulations to the Gula’s for their debut win at this years 62nd Annual Meguiar’s Detroit Autorama and happy hot rodding!
